The mission of the Columbia River Maritime Museum is to collect preserve display and interpret the maritime history culture and art of the Columbia River its tributaries and the waters of the North Pacific for the education and enjoyment of the public. The twisting and pounding of the ships skeleton with each wave begins to tear her apart under your feet. Founded in 1962 with the mission to collect and preserve historical and cultural material relevant to the Columbia River the Columbia River Maritime Museum is a private non-profit organization funded by membership contributions and admission fees.
The Museum is designated as the official maritime museum of the State of Oregon. The Columbia River Maritime Museum Miniboat Program provides a global multidisciplinary STEAM learning experience for 5th- to 7th-grade classes in the Pacific Northwest and Japan by empowering them to cooperatively design build launch and track seaworthy GPS-equipped boats on a journey across the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia Bar is an area about 3 miles wide and 6 miles long where the river enters the ocean.
Because the bar creates shallows the waters there tend to be rough and prone to a lot of unusual waves and currents. Plus the sediment in the bar is always shifting around. Thats why large container ships need a river pilot to guide them into port.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum won the institutional category for the renovation of the Astoria Train Depot and Bob and Nancy Ross won the multi-family category for the renovation of the Finn Housa property. It has been one of the pleasures of doing historic preservation work in Astoria that I have been able to work on a number of projects.
