If you are a traditionalist who considers oiling teak as a time-honored tradition I apologize but for many boaters teak is huge. Right up front what most experts suggest is disarmingly simpleclean the interior wood you want to upgrade with cotton rags and a spray bottle the 32-ounce size works well filled with water and a couple of tablespoons of Murphys Oil Soap. Here are the basic steps that I follow to refinish interior teak.
If the wood has never been refinished or if the existing finish is in poor condition remove it all from the sailboat so that you can work on it easier and apply the finish to all the surfaces. Once youre ready go ahead and slap on a respirator or paper filter mask as things are about to get very messy. Wet one of the brushes and scrub teak. Brown gunk will start coming off and collecting in the brush keep rinsing it out by swishing in the bucket of water.
That brown gunk is the old teak oil and dirt. Use a wet rag to rinse off the teak. Keep scrubbing and rinsing until rinse rag isnt picking much up.
Teak is a wood with a lot of oil in it already and is supposed to be used unfinished and allowed to age only requiring regular scrubbing. That means it will eventually turn gray if exposed to the sun as on a deck. So I scraped it and worked to refinish it.
After a lot of scraping the teak looked so much better already. Then the real work began. Sanding at least three times I probably should have done it four times with 60 grit sand paper 120 grit sand paper and finally 220 grit sand paper.
Each time I had to prep the hull with blue painters. A mixture of powdered borax and hot water will do it. Just wash the area with a mixture of three ounces of borax powder to a gallon of hot water and rinse thoroughly.
